Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Since 1883, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has been serving the area poor, providing free food, clothing and tutoring. One of the best gifts that people can give is the gift of time. Volunteers are essential to the program’s success. Volunteers are asked to bring an open and positive attitude, willingness to work hard and a smile.
Among the most popular volunteer jobs are:
• Serving meals and assisting in the kitchens
• Sorting and sizing clothing
• Preparing emergency food packages
• Working in the Earthworks Garden
•
Tutoring, teaching and mentoring children and teens
• Summer camps for kids
• Thanksgiving basket giveaway
• Christmas toy program.

ARISE Detroit!
ARISE (Activating Resources and Inspiring Service and Empowerment) Detroit! Is a coalition of community groups in Detroit, banding together in the hopes of making a bigger impact collectively than separately.
The coalition is a way to connect hundreds of programs and agencies focused on child and family issues, including anti-violence, parenting skills, reading literacy, education, neighborhood development and mentoring. A volunteer base is setup to help such organizations and programs to reach its goals.

St. Aloysius Community and Warming Center
St. Aloysius Parish was founded in 1873. The Catholic communion of faith in the Archdiocese of Detroit has a rich history of serving the poor, the marginalized, the abused and the fragile members in society. Parish communities, Catholic social service agencies, religious communities and individuals all contribute to addressing human needs and social injustice.
Volunteer opportunities include:
· Adopt a needy family by providing food, clothing and financial assistance with utilities
· Warming Center, helping the homeless

Mercy Education Project
The Mercy Education Project (MEP), located at 1450 Howard St. in Detroit, was founded 15 years ago. MEP offers a “doorway to the future,” by educating girls and women in southwest Detroit. In one-on-one tutoring sessions, girls use a combination of workbook drills, auditory work, computer work and word games to improve reading skills. Students also learn to understand math problems by using use manipulatives or items the can touch and move about.
MEP is seeking volunteers for all programs. Opportunities exist in the following areas:
· Retired teachers or other professionals to tutor girls during after-school programs

Detroit Hope Hospital
Detroit Hope Hospital is a 501 C3 nonprofit organization that provides medical, food, clothing and spiritual care to the city’s under and uninsured. The facility is volunteer driven with area doctors, nurses and community leaders donating their time and services.
Volunteer positions include:

· Chaplain (after training completed)
· Landscaping
