The 50th annual Ebony Fashion Fair
Get gorgeous. Get glamorous. And get ready!
The 50th annual Ebony Fashion Fair hits Detroit on Sunday, November 18 at 6 p.m at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, courtesy of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Detroit Alumnae Chapter.
The largest traveling high fashion show celebrates five decades of fabulous styles from top designers from all over the world, including Christian Dior, Carolina Herrera, Bill Blass and Detroit’s own Beulah Cooley. This year’s show titled, “Glam Odyssey: A Fashion Journey Into Bliss and Beyond” will surely gives glamour a fresh new meaning.
Profits from Ebony Fashion Fair will support the scholarships and community service projects of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Since Eunice W. Johnson founded Fashion Fair in 1958, the show has donated more than $55 million to charitable organizations.
“The women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Detroit Alumnae Chapter are able to implement programs to serve the Detroit community through the success of events such as the Ebony Fashion Fair,” said Anitta Orr, president of the Detroit Chapter. “By supporting the Ebony Fashion Fair the youth of Detroit — from preschool through college — benefit.”
In celebration of the 50th anniversary, this year’s fashions remix and update styles from the past to create trendy, glam looks for today. And keep in mind the garments working the Fashion Fair runway are the same ones seen on the catwalks in New York, Paris, Milan and London.
Detroit’s Ebony Fashion Fair chairwoman Shirley Jackson has been a fan of the show since she was a teenager.
“I’ll never forget the first time I saw the Ebony Fashion Fair. I was16 years old,” Jackson said. “The models were sensational, especially Richard Roundtree, who went on to become an actor and star of the movie, “Shaft.” It’s gotten even better every year since. The level of artistry and excitement keeps growing. I can’t think of another event that is as slick.
“The models appeal to every woman’s sense of style — and there’s plenty for men to enjoy too. You feel like you’re in New York watching the top designers introduce their collections.”
