Jabria BillingsleaWhen it comes to peer pressure, 17-year-old Jabria Billingslea, a junior at the Detroit International Academy, can be seen pushing girls in positive directions.
As the founder of the Girlhood Club, Jabria is bringing teens together to help boost their self-esteem, develop leadership skills, host writing seminars and encourage community service.
“I started the club when I saw a lot of girls being negative toward one another. Some girls teased me about my skin color being dark,” said Jabria, who started the non-profit organization when she was just 10 years old. “This club has made me more confident about myself and put me in a position to help others.”
About ten girls, ages 12 to 18, are currently members of the Girlhood Club. Meetings are held the fourth Saturday of the month from noon to 2 p.m. at the Arc of Detroit located at 51 W. Hancock near Woodward.
The Girlhood Club’s community service projects include hosting sleepover parties during the Angel Night weekend to keep teen girls off of the street and out of trouble, packing food for Gleaners, and assisting disabled people at the Arc of Detroit.
“I hope to expand and start other chapters throughout Michigan,” said Jabria. “The public can help out by donating their time, money and information on scholarships. Girls need to know that they’re not alone. There are others out there experiencing the same problems.”
