JOHNATHON BANKS displays his NABO cruiser-weight championship belt. - Dan Grasschuck photo“Kronk’s New Stars” is one way of describing the Kronk Boxing Team’s hottest professional prospects: Undefeated NABO cruiserweight champion Johnathon Banks, former Irish Olympian Andy Lee, and Southwest Detroit’s Octavio Lara.
Banks, Lee and Lara will headline a pro-amateur boxing card on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Compuware Arena in Plymouth.
Promoted by Second Round Inc., in association with Emanuel Steward and Dennis Turner, the Nov. 15 show has the makings of the early fight cards of former Kronk stars Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Milton McCrory, Jimmy Paul and Mickey Goodwin.
Banks (17-0, 13 KOs) will take on New York’s Derrick Brown (13-3-3) in the 12-round main event. Born and raised in Ecorse, Banks will be defending his cruiserweight title against Brown, described as a rugged fighter.
Lee (12-0, 9 KOs), a native of Limerick, Ireland, who now lives in Detroit, will face Tennessee’s Brad Austin (8-3) in a 10-round middleweight bout. HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant, in describing Lee, said the Kronk boxer “looks like a million dollars.”
Lara, nicknamed “El Peligro,” which means “dangerous” in Spanish, is making a highly-anticipated return to the ring after a “string of street troubles” slowed his career. At 22, Lara is hoping to finally live up to his potential.
In addition to the professional bouts, promoter Sylvia Steward of Second Round Inc. has added several amateur bouts in which J’Leon Love, Erik DeLeon, Leandre White and Ghieth Mohammad will be featured.
