Students interested in creative, culinary arts and fashion design have a new selection to pursue higher education.

The Art Institute recently opened its Michigan campus located in Novi. The school, which has nearly 40 affiliate campuses across the nation, will start classes on Nov. 8. Enrollment is still open. Affiliate locations include Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix and New York.

Degree programs at The Art Institute of Michigan include associate degrees in culinary arts, fashion merchandising, graphic design and Web design and interactive media. Bachelor degree programs include advertising, culinary management, fashion marketing and management, interior design and visual communications. A certificate is offered for professional baking and pastry.

Ted Blashak, president of The Art Institute of Michigan, said the school offers more options for students interested in specialized schools.

“It’s great that there is another option for Michigan career changers and recent high school graduates,” said Blashak.

Students interested in applying to the school should contact an admissions representative. An interview will be conducted. Potential students will be required to bring their transcripts so previous courses taken can be reviewed for possible transfer credit.

“Our aim is to develop the school as a leading provider of higher education in the creative arts, providing academic programs to meet the growing needs of employers in the communities we serve,” Blashak said.

There is, however, a downside to the school. Courses taken at The Art Institute of Michigan may not be transferable to another college or university, with the exception of another Art Institute affiliate.

For students looking to transfer, this may not be a good option.

High school students also have the option of enrolling early. That way, they can begin the admission process and start classes while still in high school.

Courses at The Art Institute of Michigan are 11 weeks in length and the school offers four quarters – November, January, April and June.

The Art Institute’s main campus is in Pittsburgh. It was founded in 1921to service students interested in commercial and creative arts.

The school is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and College of Technology and by the Higher Learning Commission.

The Art Institute of Michigan is located at 28125 Cabot Drive Twelve Mile Road and M-5, in Novi.
