Controlling the wheels of operation at A & M Automotive Transport is an unlikely driver.

Known as a trailblazer in the broadcast media industry, Katherine Adams is now paving new roads for women to drive on.

Since 2000, the former Emmy Award winning journalist has been steering clients in new directions, as president of A & M Automotive Transport.

“The people here in this town know that whatever I get behind, I give my all,” said Adams. “Part of my nature is to continue to be a pioneer. This was a wonderful opportunity to engage the automotive sector and to make a difference. I went into business to provide jobs. The company is a special one with a niche that transports vehicles from coast to coast, obtaining authority in the U.S. and parts of Canada.”

The ride entering into a male dominated industry hasn’t always been a smooth one. But Adams’ creativity and business savvy push her ahead.

“Every day is a tough day, so why is this any different?” asks Adams. “It’s always been tough for me, but I don’t look at it as a reason not to try. I don’t want to be sitting on the sidelines making excuses for why I haven’t achieved. If you continue to put one foot in front of the other, eventually you’ll get to your destination and won’t be overwhelmed by the business climate. We just continue to provide good service, competitive prices and continue to find new businesses that want to do business with us.”

One of Adams’ biggest challenges has been in finding owner/operators with good driving records to transport vehicles.

“It’s very difficult in this climate to find owner/operators who have good driving records and will be careful with the merchandise,” said Adams. “If you’re an owner/ operator looking to do long hauls of cars, we’re the company to call.”

Despite changes in the automotive market and an unstable economy, new businesses are finding their way to A & M Automotive.

“Our goal is to continue to be a good steward of our clients’ products,” Adams pointed out. “They give us cars to haul, and our job is to get them there in pristine condition. By maintaining high levels of customer service, we will continue to grow our business.”

Last year, the company, whose administrative office is in the Penobscot Building in downtown Detroit and yard is based in the Ypsilanti Township, achieved $2.2 in revenue and has grown to four employees and owns nine pieces of equipment.

“We try to maintain a positive approach to our business model,” said Adams. “We’ve engaged organizations such as the Michigan Minority Business Development Council and the Ford Module that allows us to share and encourage one another to stay in the game.”

Although Adams busies herself building the company, she still finds time to help others drive for success.

“I’m very involved with many non-profits, making sure that I’m not only a good business person but a good community leader,” said Adams. “As long as I do the two, my life will stay in balance.”
