Nissan looks to hold its ground with new Murano

2009 model features a number of upgrades, but is it enough?

SCOTTSDALE — When Nissan first introduced the Murano in 2003 as a 2004 model, it practically defined the idea of what a modern-day crossover vehicle looked like. Not that it was the first in the segment, but it was one of the first that had that “look.” You know, that “look” that you couldn’t describe as a car or truck, or anything else on the road for that matter. It was so different.

Truth be told, most either loved or hated the Murano. I thought the styling was kind of weird, but it grew on me. But no matter what the perspective, it was hard to deny the vehicle’s road presence, which is why so many others have tried to duplicate the styling for the segment. Clearly, if it’s true that imitation is the truest form of flattery, then the design team for the first-generation Murano should be bubbling over because practically every carmaker has picked up some styling cue from the Nissan when designing a mid-size crossover vehicle.

So I can only imagine that the idea of changing that had to come off a little risky - all things considered. Not that the exterior design of the ’09 Murano is a sharp departure from the previous model. But there are definitely some noticeable differences between the vehicles.

Key new exterior features on the 2009 model include a wide front end with a new front fascia design, a wide grille with large integrated headlights, more prominent body side character lines with 18-inch or 20-inch wheels and tires, and a distinctive rear end with an expansive rear glass area and LED taillights.

One of the most impressive features on the Murano is the new interior, described as what Nissan calls a “mobile suite.” Fitting, considering that the first generation Murano was often referred to as an “urban” terrain vehicle. It’s a fitting transition in themes considering all the interior upgrades from the previous model. The ’09 model features a new instrument panel and center stack design, new seat design with available double-stitched leather-appointed seating surfaces (nice), and an impressive mix of premium materials such as leather and aluminum, a variety of storage compartments and ambient lighting. It’s such a nice package that you’d think you were driving the automaker’s more pricier sister brand, Infiniti, which can hold its own with most luxury automakers.

Performance on the 2009 Murano is improved with a revised 265-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and 248 lb-ft. of torque, an increase of 25 horses over the previous model, with a new advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Valve Transmission), a feature that provides for better fuel efficiency without giving up on performance. The new Murano is available with a front-wheel drive or advanced all-wheel drive.

The Murano also features a new platform and suspension, body structure and steering for a noticeably improved ride comfort and handling. The vehicle is available in three models, including the base S, SL and premium LE. Pricing ranges from $26,330 to $35,910. Gas mileage is rated at 18 city and 23 hwy.

Technological features such as push button ignition, and options such as Intelligent Key, rear view monitor, integrated iPod connectivity, a DVD mobile entertainment system with 9-inch screen, 11-speaker Bose audio system add to the vehicle’s luxurious feel. It also features an enhanced touch screen Nissan navigation system with voice activation XM NavTraffic real-time traffic information and 9.3GB music box hard drive.

Overall, it’s an impressive upgrade for a “first” in the segment seeking to stay competitive in a now more crowded market. But whether it is enough for the vehicle to invoke that same appeal that made you say “wow!” when you first saw the vehicle in 2003 is questionable considering that there is so much more on the market now.
