Big Brown
Jockey Kent Desormeaux celebrates after crossing the finish line riding Big Brown in the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday at Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Ky. Paul Pompa Jr., the original owner of the big colt, which won Saturday’s race by 4 1/2 lengths, says he named the horse for delivery giant UPS. The company is known in the industry as “Big Brown” and uses the Brown theme in some ads. Big Brown’s victory was somewhat overshadowed by the tragedy to filly Eight Belles, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby but was put down on the track following the race with both front ankles fractured. – David Watkins photo, Oxygen Photography
