CBP announces expansion of Model Ports Initiative

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently announced the selection of 18 additional airports that will be part of the Model Ports Initiative. This joint venture between federal agencies, the travel industry, airlines and airport authorities was designed to improve the processes for clearing and welcoming travelers into the United States.

The Model Ports Initiative is part of the Rice-Chertoff Initiative established in 2006 to enhance border security with the use of the best new technologies while streamlining security processes and facilitating travel for visitors.

In the coming months, travelers arriving at these airports will see several improvements, including an increased number of video monitors, a welcome message and information on the entry process.

Detroit is one of 18 airports selected based on the locations with the largest number of foreign visitors arriving annually.

Discounts on prescription drug 2-1-1 help line

Uninsured and underinsured people in Detroit and Wayne County can take advantage of the World Medical Relief Prescription Assistance Program as part of a collaboration between World Medical Relief, the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority and United Way of Southeastern Michigan’s 2-1-1 help line.

Those who need discount prescription drug service, as well as medical equipment, should call 2-1-1 and ask for a referral to the World Medical Relief. This initiative is part an expansion of United Way’s 2-1-1 service capabilities. Until now, the service had not promoted health service information. Now, 2-1-1 operators will ask callers if they are insured or underinsured.

World Medical Relief offers a prescription program for people 18 years and older, with income criteria. It is expected that 1,000 to 5,000 may take advantage of the program.
