The NAACP concluded its 99th annual national convention about two weeks ago in Cincinnati, OH. The theme for this year’s convention was “Power, Justice, Freedom, Vote!” For 99 years the NAACP has been an advocate for these very things: power, justice, freedom and the right to vote.

As we head to the polls for the Aug. 5 primary let's remember those four words: power, justice, freedom, vote. Let's remember those words and make the decision to not have low voter turnout for the primary. Predictions are made that in the City of Detroit only 15-20 percent of the city's eligible voters will participate in the primary.

When we neglect the primary and only focus on the "big" election, we dilute our power. Power that so many fought and died for us to have. Power that we don't take advantage of when we decide to sit out the primary election.

Justice: Whether it's due to the design of the ballot or lack of information about those running to be judges in various courts, these elections need to be taken just as seriously as any other. If we want to make sure the justice system is truly for all people, then all people must do their part and vote for qualified judges.

Freedom is not free as long as there is legislation such as the Patriot Act that gives the government the right to monitor and tap anyone's phone calls and emails with only the slightest hint of being a possible threat. Our freedoms are very much in jeopardy.

We must all come to the recognition that all politics are local. The decisions made by our city, county and statewide government officials sometimes have more impact on our lives than those made by the president.

No matter what you are voting for, the most important thing is to remember to vote in all elections. Voting gives us the power to always be able to continue to fight for justice and freedom.
