Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

Last week Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was forced to post bond and ordered to take a drug test after allegedly assaulting Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian White, who was serving a subpoena at the mayor’s sister’s house in connection with the criminal case against him.

According to reports, the deputy was on assignment to serve a subpoena to Bobby Ferguson, whose company truck was spotted at Kilpatrick’s sister’s home. As White, accompanied by his partner, JoAnne Kinney, inquired as to whether or not Ferguson was on the premises, the irate mayor burst out of the home, charged White and physically threw him off of the porch causing him to injure his hip, the deputy testified.

Kilpatrick’s bond was set at $7,500, his personal travel privileges have been suspended and he can only travel outside of the state with court approval. In the meantime, City Council voted at a Monday session to continue its efforts to have the mayor removed from office.

Curbing cruelty

State Sen. Buzz Thomas recently introduced legislation to make it a felony to possess, buy or sell a recording of a dog fight or animal shooting, legislation aimed at further curbing animal cruelty atrocities.

"I find it despicable that folks could be sharing videos and photos of dogs fighting or being shot." Thomas said. "Today I call for these perpetrators to be treated equally as others engaged in dog fighting and animal cruelty."

Thomas' bill would make it a maximum four-year felony to own, posses, use, buy, sell or offer to sell a recording of dog fighting. If convicted, a fine of up to $5,000 could also be levied.

City Summer Lunch Program

In an effort to ensure that children from low-income households continue to receive nutritious meals while they are away from school, the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion is running a summer lunch program through Aug. 25. The City of Detroit’s program is the largest in the state and in its 39th year.

Children 18 and under or individuals 26 and under in a recognized program for the mentally and physically disabled may receive free meals through the Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Michigan Department of Education. The meals are fully prepared by a catering supplier and delivered to more than 250 educational, community and faith-based sites throughout Detroit.

Parents can identify DHWP Summer Food Service sites in their neighborhoods by calling 311-224-INFO (for those outside the 313 area or who use a cell phone) or by linking to Michigan Department of Education website at www.michigan.gov/mde. Individuals or organizations interested in feeding children this summer should contact Sharon Quincy at 313-876-4850.
