CHRONICLE STAFF REPORTS
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick must leave office

Detroit, the nation’s -largest African American -electoral base, has reached a state of paralysis. It has come to a point where the mayor’s personal problems are overshadowing anything he has to say regarding the city. We have long resisted calls and other requests to urge Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign because of his mountainous legal troubles.

But no more.

We cannot stand by and watch this city fall victim to the mistakes of the mayor. In the interest of saving Detroit from Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s legal and political issues that have hindered this city’s progress, we strongly urge the mayor to step aside and address his problems. His issues are holding the city hostage. Detroit’s future is bigger than the mayor.

When the mayor was elected, the Michigan Chronicle felt that he injected a new sense of hope for the city. Our Jan. 9, 2002 mayoral inauguration edition headline was “High Hopes.” His initiatives and negotiating skills have helped spearhead neighborhood development, attract new businesses and restructure downtown, which Detroit will continue to reap benefits from.

The Michigan Chronicle was one of the first local publications to highlight Kilpatrick’s re-pre sentation of a possible new era of change in politics when he was a state representative. Who else aside from the Michigan Chronicle supported Kilpatrick during his bitter 2005 relection when he was down in the polls? Kilpatrick’s charisma, eloquence and intelligence seemed to inspire many to be more socially and politically engaged.

But today we realize that we are a long way from those youthful ideas that created excitement and were the embodiment of new possibilities.

Yes, earlier we took the position that the system of jurisprudence should take its course instead of hastily backing calls for the mayor’s resignation. We emphasized at the time that Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy should be allowed to do her job and the burden to prove Kilpatrick guilty was in the hands of the prosecuting attorneys.

However, as the legal troubles of the mayor continue to mount week after week, we have been painstakingly examining the impact these issues were having on the city, and whether it was time for the mayor to go. The image of the mayor being jailed on Aug. 7 sent a very powerful, and damaging, message around the world. We saw our mayor escorted into jail like a common criminal. His shame was our shame.

We will not play the blame game and pander to the idea that the mayor’s issues stem from racism. We did not take this decision lightly because of our identity as an African American newspaper operating in a climate where race and racism often command our political discussions. But the troubles of the mayor squarely emanated from decisions he made not to settle the case with the two police officers, Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope, and instead decided to fight them in court. He came out of those court proceedings charged with perjury, felony and other charges. We cannot allow Detroit’s ability to move forward to be strangled by the escalating legal woes of the mayor.

For an African American newspaper deeply steeped in the traditions of Freedom’s Journal, the first Black newspaper in the country, we have a commitment to not only present an objective view of the Black community, but also, when need be, to be critical and take action when those we elect to office do not represent the best interests of the people.

That notwithstanding, the mayor, like every other citizen, must be allowed the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Evidently, the wheels of justice are quickly turning. But the devastating consequences of his legal troubles and their effect on the city so far only reminds us that it is going to get worse.

When Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Thomas E. Jackson banned the mayor from traveling and ordered him to wear a tether for violating the conditions of his bond, it became clear that Kilpatrick needed to go for the betterment of Detroit and Michigan. There are arguments that the mayor can still carry out his responsibilities, but it is clear that a mayor who cannot travel, cannot work to forge the type of relations needed on a national and international level to move the city forward.

Kilpatrick should spare himself and the city the embarrassment of being forcibly removed from office by either the Detroit City Council, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Attorney General Mike Cox or Prosecutor Kym Worthy. The council forfeiture hearings to commence Aug. 18 and the governor’s Sept. 3 removal hearings only promise a sad and troubling future for this city and the mayor.

Detroit’s image is being made a mockery of globally – from late night talk shows to the Internet. For us, this is no laughing matter. The issues facing the mayor have taken some of the spotlight away from major events such as the PGA Tour, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Detroit’s representation in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The crisis in the beleagured Motor City is being reported in the international media, China included.

On a national level, Kilpatrick’s issues present a challenge for Detroit and the state in the upcoming presidential election. The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama issued a rare statement on the troubling issues involving the mayor last week, asking for a quick resolution because of the role Detroit plays as a Democratic stronghold.

Whether it is on a local, regional, state, national or international level, it is evident that Kilpatrick can no longer function to full capacity as mayor. If his love for Detroit is as strong as he professes, he will make the right decision which, we believe, is to step down.

I pray that Mr. Kilpatrick will do the honorable thing and resign - IMMEDIATLY! You should note that I referred to him as Mr. and not Mayor. He does not deserve the title.

I also hope, since he claims that he loves the City of Detroit, that he does the only honorable thing, and resign. I don't know if he's guilty or if he's innocent, but it seems that the pendulum sways further and further towards the guilty side with everything surfacing day-by-day. I've lived in Detroit since 1992, moved here from an affluent Washington DC Suburb, and have made this my home. For the first time in 16 years, I am ashamed of the sideshow that my adopted city has become. I work with International Business Leaders, and one of them brought me a newspaper from Hong Kong and one from Frankfurt, Germany....Kwame was on the second page of both papers. Kwame, you're hurting us, the city, the city's children, and the city's business. We can NOT afford to let this wound hemorrhage any longer, you must resign, and let US heal. By US, I mean city, suburbs, state. I live in the city (Woodbridge) and would never have thought of leaving, but I am seriously considering pulling my business out of the city as well as my residence and set up "camp" in Southfield, simply because the scandal is overshadowing everything else around us.

While it is clear that Kwame in not a martyr, he has plenty of company as a Black political figure who has spent time in jail. Am I mistaken to recognize that he was let out of jail the next day because he should have never been sent to jail in the first place. This fact seems to have escaped those who have joined the chorus in this feeding frenzy.

Thank you Michigan Chronicle for speaking truth to power. Black newspapers should not only support Black elected officials just because they are Black. What you did in your Wednesday is is a keepsake and will be remembered for years to come. I bought five copies of the paper and will keep two for my children growing up to see and learn what can happen to a young man who thinks he is invincible. The remaining three papers I am mailing to my family in Georgia. Kwame Kilpatrick needs to go now.

Mayor Kilpatrick can no longer effectively manage the business for the city of Detroit. Kilpatrick's credibility and polictical influence has vanished. At times I've felt that Kilpatrick has received unfair media coverage and theres definately a double standard for some, but he should have utilized betterjudgement that would have kept him out of this mess in the first place. As a life long Detroiter and a person who voted for the mayor twice, I have come to believe that Mayor Kilpatrick has no other choice but resignation!

The mayor's issues may have started out as a private matter with regard to his infidelities but this is no longer the case. There are too many critical issues facing this city, most notably the crisis with the Detroit School Board, that are no getting the attention they require. Our children are our greatest resource. What message are we sending them when we disregard their best interests over what has become more a matter of pride and arrogance for the mayor, the city council, and the whole of the Detroit political power structure?

While I feel that it is time for the mayor to resign so the city can begin to heal, I also feel that the entire city council needs to be removed. The conduct of the city council is just as dishonorable and destructive to the city of Detroit as the mayor's. It has truly been disheartening to watch what has been happening in the city of Detroit over the last couple of years and personally I don't see things getting better as long as the current regime (mayor and city council) are allowed to continue. Neither is looking out for the best interests of Detroit. Their actions show this is all about personal victories.

This mayor had so much potential! He gave us, the people of Detroit and the citizens of this State so much hope for the future....Detroit's revival. No matter how differently we may all feel now, we all wanted the best for him and Detroit. Our greatest loss here is what should have been and could have been...

If the MI Chron had stepped up a long time ago, we might not be going through the craziness we now are experiencing. The prolonged debacle has given the bigots and racists a field day, which has irked me to no end.

Having said that, I am glad that you have taken this important step. A much sronger statement than the Council of Baptist Pastors.

Resignation, if it ever comes, will be too late. Now that the mayor has been cleared to go to the convention, the Democratic party must step up and tell him to stay home. We cannot allow the first African American presidential candidate to be over-shadowed by this side show. Regardless of his innocence or guily in any charges, this is far too important of a time for the entire community. Mr. Mayor, do Obama a favor and STAY HOME!!!

TDetroit said it best... "We can NOT afford to let this wound hemorrhage any longer." Guilty or not, the City of Detroit residents and businesses deserve better. The infectious wound has spread enough hatred, racism and divisiveness amongst neighbors and friends. Mr. Kilpatrick is not in love with Detroit, he is in love with Mr. Kilpatrick and the power that manipulating this City has afforded him. On another note, let's do simple math: $8 million dollars would have paid a $50,000 a year salary for 160 police officers or firefighters; or $8 million dollars would have paid the $300 trash removal free for over 26,000 households. For those who still believe this is a personal issue between a man, his wife and his mistress look at it this way ... $8 million dollars is one expensive TRICK. This city has been pimped long enough.

Shar...if I may add to your number crunching....

That $8M could have also done some infrastructure improvements (as well as paid for more Police Officers, and Firefighters). I live right by Wayne State, and my immediate vicinity is fairly clean and well maintained, BUT, as soon as you leave the Woodbridge district, it's like a war zone. I drove up Grand River yesterday from MLK to Dexter and there wasn't a single streetlight working. On my return trip from my mothers house (Dexter and Grand River area) I detoured down Livernois (White Castle was calling my name), same scenario. For a one mile stretch, not a single streetlight, and if it hadn't been for the multitude of liquor stores' lights, the area would have been pitch black. Half of the city doesn't have working street lights...how is anyone supposed to feel safe? My mother works as a nurse, night shift, and I have her call me when she leaves her house until she gets on the freeway, every night, simply because she's driving through a shelled-out dark wasteland. $8M could have razed hundreds of abandonded homes, taking away the cess-pools they create for rapists and murderers. How my young girls, women and also men do we have to find dead in abandoned homes until we tear them down? $8M could have been used to cut the overgrown grass in some vacant lots. My car was hit two years ago because someone came out of a street and he couldn't see me around the corner because the grass was at least 6feet tall.

I wonder if the media didn't force feed this crap down our throats EVERYDAY would we feel this way. Everyone who is persecuting Mr. Kilpatrick needs to look in the mirror. Stop being led like sheep to the slaughter by the media. Stop thinking that a fat white guy from Channel 7 (obviously with nothing else to do) following the Mayor's every waking move dictate how you think. There are more important things transpiring in this City to cover other than Mayor Kilpatrick. Just let the judicial system work.

You still have your integrity - they do not! As for those who think that this ever had anything to do with either race or sex please wake up. This situation was & is about the abuse of the public trust, misappropriation of millions of dollars and lying in court. The sex is his wife's concern - maybe his minister - i didn't care and neither did most Detroiters.

Too many people feared this man and could not do the right thing and come forward. He has and is conitnuing to make a mockery of all black people in this city. Kwame with is whole living large agenda, with his cadre of police guards, promotes the stereotype of a black gangster - now contrast that with our last mayor- who makes you feel proud?

Is it in Detroits best interests to teach our youth that sex, anywhere you can get it, including your friends wife is OK? Father kids, have fun, because you don't need to be a father to them..leave them with their mother or grandmother. I might be an old man but I beleive moral values mean something.

It is sad that some people still want to criticize the media for reporting the truth of Defendant Kwame Kilpatrick's scandals. The position of mayor of any large city will be subject to media scrutiny. The media did not make KK perjure himself in court, assault an officer of the law, and violate his bond restrictions. I applaud the MC for looking out for what is best for residents of the city of Detroit.

If Detroiters did not care about the "sex" issue, it would not have been brought up as a question in the first place. Furthermore the money used to pay the lawsuit, that was ordered by the court, came from an insurance fund and would have never been used to cut the grass, pick up trash or hire officers.

There are a number of issues I would have comments for today, but first I have to say a couple of “well-saids” to Diane (Comment 10) and Tdetroit (Comment 2). I was born here and lived here most of my life. This has and always will be my home, but it is lacking in the fact that I cannot say with pride where I am from when asked. Even though this all started out with personal information and attacks it has grown to be much more. I supported our Mayor through so much, but as if he were my child, I am tired now. I have run out of excuses for his actions and am tired of defending him to the point where my stock line is to let the judicial system do it’s thing. I realize that he is under is a lot of stress, but it goes back to what is done in the dark will come to the light. I am a true believer of karma and what goes around comes back around. I feel for his sons more than anyone else, because they didn’t ask for this and had nothing to do with his actions. I truly hope that the female company that was there in the beginning was really worth all that it has cost, not only the mayor but the entire city. I never thought I would consider leaving my home but I am seriously having issues with staying in a city that has a clown choir for a city council and a constantly in court mayor to run things. Between the two sections of local government I am ashamed to say I even live in the city. We need to do the clean sweep thing…get rid of the council members AND the mayor. More for the good of the city than anything else. Don’t get me wrong….I am still saying prayers for Mayor Kilpatrick. Whatever is meant to be for him will be.

I support my Mayor. He should be allowed to go through the legal process like any other citizen. The Local media causes more harm to us the citizenry, when we have to hear their constant attacks against the Mayor. He was entiltled to competant legal represention, and a fair trial with a jury of his peers, and that just did not happen in the new court, which was a replacement of the former Detroit Recorder's Court. Detroiter's soon forget our past, and even currently, the court systems in America has double standards. When the former Mayor of Warren was charged with assaulting a black youth, there was no outcry from the media for him to step down, nor was there any opposition from the city residents. By a jury of his peers, he was found not guilty. Former Macomb County Sheriff Hackle was charged with rape, found guilty, and went to jail, however his son was elected to the position. Many may not know about the Macomb County Intermediate School district scandal where several school officials were charged with embezzeling Hundreds of thousands of dollars, money that was appropiated for students with learning disabilities ( mentally retarded). There was a judicial hearing in Lansing that lasted for weeks. No outcry from the press on that situation. So why do Detroiter's feed into the media frenzy, with their public opinions, usually mis-informed. Why there is no discussion on the Michigan Lawyers Grievence Board investigations on the lawyers incompetence who handled the Whistle Blowers case. Stefani, and Corporate Council will probally lose their license to pratcice law when this is over. People need to be more accurately informed before they start commenting on issues.

    Thanks

Who possibly be a progenitor of a so-called paralysis. Can it be the press. The press (the makers and maintainers of public opinion) seems locked in Mayor's business, yet the city goes on. Nothing has stopped. You have participated in that legion of 'headline hunters' and 'Psuedo' opinion makers who keeps the public's mind in other's bedrooms and private conversations. The Mayor will process his business through the legal system without you egging him to removal. In the interim the city goes on. I have a lot of respect for all of these young people whom we have raised, who operate the city in all of its critical capacities for us. I have never seen as many people who look like us working on the streets and in other critical municipal capacities as I have seen in the most recent years. You are not authorized to jump on the band wagon with the white press to help create the look of the city as being in havoc and unproductive. This is not so. The city is functioning through the many talented workers who were put there by their wit and sweat and baised on opportunities developed by Coleman Young and Mayor Kilpatrick. We need to highlight the positive. This City works despite the Mayor's troubles. There is much news that we need to be aware of and issues that we need to be cautious of from local machinations from those who want this city with our investment and without our control. We must be on the lookout for world-wide news that impacts the communities that both look like us and other local, national and international humanities. Opportunities for new investments and businesses should highlight your front page not the draining issues of those who look like us alone. I cannot accept that we are the only city or citizens with political problems that impact upon this region. We need to be more stategic just as the white press is. Every morsel of information that they report supports their status-quo and their power. We even know when a crimminal is black or white. If he is black, he/she (yet unconvicted) is displayed on the media pictorial grids without a hint of human indicia. If he is white, we are dragged into understanding why he may have committed the crime (even in the first reporting). We must remember, even though power may be green, the tools of control to maintain the status quo (by those few who have real power)are colored Black, White, Yellow or Brown as it helps to foster their power positions. Hopefully, your news will help us to continue develop power to survive and grow. No one man's circumstances can block that unless our collective minds are trained by the opinion makers to just reside, live and DIE there instead of living in the whole universe of possibility. You have a responsibility to us and we stood by you. Exercise that responsibilty to show us the world and where and how we can compete and succeed. You can then naturally evolve a profitable relationship with as a heralder of a positive energy and a positive people have come out of Detroit. And many of them look like us!

I no longer live in the Detroit area, but my roots are still firmly planted. When Dennis Archer removed himself from the reelection process, it was a sad sad day for the city of Detroit. This man of integrity, and respect chose to wash his hands of the immovable city coucil and it's years of Coleman Young corruption. Imagine what Detroit could be, had he stayed in office. Instead the city is repreented by an overgrown pretnetious bully, who believes and has proven, he is above the law to this point. His arrogance, his bold faced lies, and his total dismissal of the people of Detroit, speaks volumes to the world that has been privvy to this ongoing embarassment. There is no place for this story or it's continuing ugly chapters to hide. Detroit is a joke for the global community, as people watch, read and listen in disbelief, as this man and his posse hold this city hostage. Detroit, barely keeping it's head above water with the auto companies, jobless rate and mortgage foreclosures, desperately needs a deep breath of fresh air. That breath needs to be inclusive of a new, honest, and innovative city council who is lead by a person of integrity, who cannot be swayed from serving the citizens of Detroit. The Mayor has stated numerous times that those who want him to step down are racially driven. Yes Kwame, for the first time you speak the truth, All Races want you to resign.

    Melvin,

Because most people are ignorant and do not understand that if they allow business leaders and religious communities to bargain on behalf of the mayor then the prosecutors office is in contempt. The judicial system states that we all have the RIGHT to a fair trial. But what we forget, that before the judicial system respected us (African Americans) they charged and convicted us according to how they felt that morning!

Wake up Detroit!! If they can prosecute the Mayor of a major city, what do you think they will do to you and NO ONE knows who you are and won't even know that you were sent to prison.

So before you jump on the band wagon and declare "Hang the Mayor!" make sure you are careful because the next agenda is "Hang the rest of the African boys!

I read some of these comments and just cringe that people are actually still supporting Kwame Kilpatrick and trying to turn this into a race issue.

The issue isn't picking on a black man for having illicit sex.

The issue is perjury, coverups, unwarranted firings, his wife beating up on a stripper hired for a party at the city provided mansion, covering up of an ordered murder, using pubic funds for personal illicit business with his girlfriend(s), using public funds for personal things like going to an entertainment park, screwing up on his orders in court and going outside the U.S. without permission, assaulting police officers, and now we read how the FBI is pursuing a case regarding Kwame and his father, Bernard, accepting kickbacks to accept their bids for contracts.

Give me a break! Detroit can't afford anymore of this crap.

The issue to me isn't just the perjury and the flagrant infidelity, its the culture of corruption that has engulfed this city, by a political machine that requires good people to pay to play at political influence. Even in this editorial, you have failed to acknowledge the real damage to this city which cannot attract investment from outside the region because of evident corruption. May the Mayor's resignation and removal be the first in a series of city hall and council changes in a new era of political accountability, rules, process, and putting the citizens first.

The Mayor and his supporters should have had the analytical ability to see through his guilt a long-time ago and asked him to step aside. Governor Eliot Spitzer of New York did not linger for a minute longer than necessary. He resigned. If the Mayor's age or moral failings escaped him, many of his supporters - his mother, Oscar King and the Baptist Ministers, the Michigan Chronicle - have been indecisive too long and thereby becoming part of the problem. The real hero that's helped everyone to realize Mr. Mayor is in trouble is Judge Giles. The courageous decision that sent KWAME TO JAIL has saved this city. Thank you Judge Giles. Thank you Wayne County Jail.

Some of their logic is just plain ignorant, stemming from the false impression that these problems stem from Kwame's personal life behaviors, rather than outright thievery, and his unethical persecution honest, ethical public servants. I'm appalled at his supporters even more than I'm appalled at him.

He can not do city business as usual he is in court every other day or meetings with lawyers or on pleasure trips. This is not about media overkill, they are just reporting what's there and KK keeps it coming.
And by the way the millions of dollars paid out to the (Nnumerous) lawsuits does NOT come from an insurance fund it comes DIRECTLY from the city.
