Judge rules city must release text messages at time of dancer’s death

U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen has ruled that the city must release text messages from Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings, former chief of staff Christine Beatty and other high ranking officials created around the time of the death of Tamara Greene.

Greene, a stripper who went by the name “Strawberry,” is rumored to have danced at a party at the Manoogian Mansion.

An attorney for Greene’s family wants the text messages released because he believes high-ranking city officials placed roadblocks in the way of an investigation into Greene’s 2003 shooting death.

Rosen denied city officials’ claims of privilege, saying the city could not assert a legitimate claim of privilege to messages that would obviously be about governmental matters, not personal ones, since they were exchanged by city officials.

Many high school students do not graduate in four years

According to graduation rates released by the state, 25 percent of high school students do not graduate in four years. A formula that tracked individual students from 9th grade in 2003 to 2007, and accounts for transfers in and out of a district; students who leave school and return in another year; and other factors was used to obtain this figure.

Graduation figures around the state dropped from 85.8 percent to 75.5 percent, while Detroit’s rates dropped from 66.8 percent in the 2005-06 school year to 58.4 percent.
