It’s a friend-raiser, not a fundraiser
The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Collaborative is partnering with area organizations to host the Eastside Live event on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Chandler Park, in Detroit.
Additional partners include the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative, the Samaritan Center and St. John Health. The event aims to raise awareness in the community about the Kroc Center, which is being developed as a family resource, educational and recreational center next to Chandler Park.
“Our goal with this event is two-fold,” said Carolyn Patrick-Wanzo, a member of the Detroit Kroc Center’s Volunteer Leadership Team. “To celebrate the community collaboration being exhibited on Detroit’s east side and to get people engaged. It’s a friend-raiser, not a fundraiser, and we’re proud of that. There will be activities for people of every age.”
One of the main attractions is a 1.6-mile fun run/walk through Chandler Park and along the future location of Conner Creek Greenway. Registration for the fun run/walk begins at 8 a.m., and participants will begin walking promptly at 9 a.m. The other main attraction is the Eastside Live Community Fair.
Additionally, FM 98 WJLB’s morning crew including DJs Coco, Foolish and Mr. Chase will be live onsite from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. to pump up the crowd.
Highlights of Eastside Live Community Fair, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., include:
• A health screening area, including cholesterol, blood pressure and PSA checks by St. John Health
• Children’s activities including inflatable bounce houses
• Informational booths highlighting the programs and services of the Kroc Center, DECC and Samaritan Center organizations
• Environmentally sustainable activities, such as Urban Farming lessons and “green” vendors
• Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s Blues Cruiser, a mobile health and wellness information center, which will also feature children’s activities and giveaways
• Health and wellness activities by the US Navy
• Live music from The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Brigade, The Front Street Blues Band and Godz Boiz, among others
• Complimentary refreshments and onsite recycling
During the event, The Salvation Army’s Harding Corps, which will relocate to the Kroc Center upon its completion, will celebrate its 120th anniversary of serving the residents of Detroit’s east side.
Eastside Live is a community-wide event organized by The Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center and made possible through partnerships with the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative (DECC), Samaritan Center, St. John Health and FM 98 WJLB.
Chandler Park is located at Conner and Chandler Park Drive.
