Holiday spending down, shopping smarter up

To ensure you get the best for your money and become smarter in spending your hard-earned dollars, here are a few tips you can use before you step out the door.

• Create a budget. Decide immediately how much you plan to spend this year and for whom. This will prevent you from driving aimlessly across town searching for items, overspending and adding additional people to your list.

• Pay with cash. Spending on your credit card will only put you in more debt after the holiday. And not only will you find yourself paying for the item you purchased, but also you will be paying the accruing interest rate on your credit card.  You will find yourself paying for the item you bought for the holidays well into the next year.

• You can get discounts at home at your fingertips. Use your home computer to find coupons from your favorite department stores. Most department stores advertise and have additional discount coupons on their websites. Macy's, Target, Best Buy, Meijer, Wal-Mart, Victoria Secret, and other major retailers have coupons you can print and take with you to the store for additional discounts.

• Not sure what to get that special someone? Why not a gift card? Many stores and restaurants offer gift cards that can be used throughout the year in increments of $10 and up. Especially if they are coffee drinkers, or book lovers.  Starbucks, McDonalds, Dunkin' Donuts, Border's Books, and Walden Books are great in providing and honoring gift cards.

Lastly, don't be afraid to negotiate with a retailer for an item you are interested in purchasing. Instead of paying with a credit card, offer to pay cash. Ask to speak with the manager of the store and let them you know you plan to pay cash. Ask if they will take off the tax, allowing you to simply pay the retail price. Most stores don't want to lose your business and will come to an agreement with you.

You don't have to stress over what you can't do this holiday. Instead, take the time to start early in finding ways to be savvy and resourceful.  This year's holiday shopping can be a happy and fun experience if you shop smarter and wiser. Choose to become an educated consumer and you will find more money in your wallet than going out this holiday season.
