» American Diabetes Association and Eli Lilly and Company unite to fight diabetes epidemic facing African-Americans

To kick off American Diabetes Month, the American Diabetes Association’s annual Diabetes Update event returns to Detroit along with Eli Lilly and Company’s national initiative, F.A.C.E. Diabetes.
  
The event will take place at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile Rd. on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
  
Come learn more about a variety of topics, including diabetes management, new products and treatments, diet and nutrition, and how to avoid complications. Diabetes educators will be available to provide practical tips on how individuals can better manage diabetes. Free.

November is American Diabetes Month, a time to communicate the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of proper diabetes control. This year, the month focuses on the deadly complications of diabetes and asks the American public “Why should you care about diabetes?”

Given the epidemic proportions of diabetes in the African-American community, the American Diabetes Association and Eli Lilly and Company have all united to help address the critical issues facing African-Americans living with diabetes in Michigan, specifically within Detroit.  For more information, visit www.diabetes.org/detroit or www.face-diabetes.com.

This is an exciting time for the Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Board of Education. Over the next weeks and months, educators, community leaders, teachers, staff and parents will review the data to work on new educational designs to enhance rigor, relevance and relationships for our students. The format and timeline for implementation of the designs is being reviewed. With the strong support of foundations and agencies including The Skillman Foundation and United Way, we plan to have one campus ready to go for the upcoming school year.
