Last week Wednesday, Kohl’s removed a curly wig called “Ghetto Fab” from its online Halloween catalog in response to protests on their Facebook fan page two days earlier.
“We are both embarrassed and apologize for the offensive nature of the merchandise description,” Vicki Shamion, Kohl’s senior vice president of public relations told Journal Sentinel.
The wig’s name, assigned by the manufacture, California Costumes was among a large selection of Halloween costumes Kohl’s was offering through a wholesale program with Buyseasons, one of the largest online Halloween wholesalers in the United States.
According to the Journal Sentinel, Jalem Getz, Buyseasons’ chief executive officer who stated that the wig is sold through hundreds of other retailers said he was not aware of the consumer complaints.
Providing an explanation for the product name, he stated, “’Ghetto fabulous’ is a slang term. It is not a derogatory term. It’s used by the younger generation.”
Other retailers including Sears and Kmart, both operated by Sears Holdings Corp. also pulled the product from their website last week. Meijer who continues to sell the wig online changed the product name to “Women’s Wig.”
