WARREN (WWJ) – Warren police are investigating the kidnapping of an infant.
Police say the incident happened around 6:45 p.m. Monday at a gas station at 9 Mile and Hoover roads.
According to investigators, a 3-month-old child was sitting in the car, which was left unattended as the infant’s father went into the gas station. That’s when the thief moved in and drove off in the car.
The father called 911 after seeing a man get into the vehicle and drive away.
The thief didn’t get very far before he realized there was an innocent child in the backseat and ditched the car, which was found about a block away at Marmon and Cadillac avenues.
Eyewitness Robert Nault said he saw the incident unfold as authorities swarmed the white Chevy SUV.
“You can’t even get nowhere near the car, they’ve got it surrounded with police cars. You’ve got Warren police out here, Michigan State Police are out here,” said Nault.
Police said the kidnapper ran off and left the baby in the back seat, unharmed.
Investigators are now looking for the suspect, described as a black male in his 20′s who is between 6’4″ and 6’6″ tall.
The father could be charged for leaving the baby unattended.
Anyone with information on the kidnapping is asked to contact Warren police at 586-574-4700.
