Hundreds Take Part In March To Honor MLK At Detroit High School

DETROIT (WWJ) – The students of Martin Luther King, Jr Senior High School honored the late Doctor King Monday morning with a march in Detroit.

The one and a half mile long march followed music and dance performances at the school.

Dr. Larry Charleston, a graduate of MLK Jr. High School and now a neurologist, attended the event.

“It’s great to come back and see all of the talent here – and a lot of times Detroit gets a bad rap and people just don’t understand the potential, the talent, the dreams and goals that are realized – just here in Detroit Public Schools,” said Charleston.

Many of the students’ performances focused on Dr. King’s teaching of non-violence and how people can apply that to everyday conflict resolution.

Before the march, students held a program inside the school featuring music and dance performances. Esther Charleston of Detroit was moved by the program:

“The music, the skits, and I’m excited because my son who graduated from here is on the program so I’m excited – I’m a proud mom here,” said Esther Charleston.

Hundreds braved the cold to take part in the march in Detroit.
