Former Detroit City Council president Monica Conyers has been sentenced to 37 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Avern Cohn. The judge also gave her two years supervised probation, according to reports.
Upon hearing the sentence, Conyers reportedly began screaming and vowed to appeal the decision.
She must report to prison on July 1.
Conyers, wife of Rep. John Conyers (D- Detroit) admitted taking at least $6,000 in bribes in connection with her vote concerning a Texas-based sludge-hauling company.
Bribery conspiracy can carry a sentence of five years, and prosecutors had requested Conyers receive something in the four-year range.
Conyers has 10 days to appeal.
