Detroit Resident

I'll say it again-- even with the understanding about Wal-Mart's rep re: worker wages, hostility to union culture, treatment of vendors/import sources, etc., I'm not sure why the company's site scouts always seem monomaniacally focused on shoehorning locations into already relatively dense suburban sites, when there is "plenty" of blighted and otherwise unproductive landspace available in Detroit proper. The reactionary rationales about "shrinkage" (theft, in highfalutin industry parlance) and crime are just elaborate codes for "we don't really want to be around the urban consumer, but provided they have their own transportation, we will hire some so that should be good enough."
