  • RALLY ON VIOLENCE ISSUES CHARGE TO CITY LEADERS

    About a hundred Detroiters converged in front of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit on July 6 to protest the recent wave of killings and shootings that have many looking over their shoulders while on the streets.

    The rally took place on the same day that Detroit Mayor Dave Bing tapped Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans as Detroit’s new police chief.

    Detroit Public Schools are ensuring that the educational needs of students affected by recent violence are being met. DPS Emergency Financial
    Manager Robert C. Bobb visited with the families of the recent victims of the off and on campus school shootings.

    Teachers of these students have already prepared classroom work to be delivered to the homes of the students. A plan is in place to have four of the buildings teachers regularly visit with the families to assist the students with their assigned schoolwork.

  • CITY AND OLYMPIA ENTERTAINMENT WORKING TO DEVELOP NEW LEASE FOR JOE LOUIS ARENA

    Olympia Entertainment has informed the City of Detroit via personal phone call and hand-delivered letter that, pursuant to the terms of its current lease, Olympia Entertainment will not exercise its option to extend the current lease on the Joe Louis and Cobo Arenas for an additional 20 years. The current lease, which covers both arenas, expires on June 30, 2010, and automatically renews for 20 years if Olympia Entertainment did not notify the city of its decision on the option by June 30.
