In 2007, the NAACP conducted a ceremony in which the so-called “N word” was symbolically “buried.” That sounded rather silly to me, but I was in agreement with the sentiment behind it.
As expected, it brought about little, if any, change. A depressing number of Black people continue to toss the word “nigger” around casually. It is especially bad amongst younger people and in hip-hop/rap music.
It makes no sense to embrace a term created to degrade and denigrate you. And please, spare me the lame “It’s a term of endearment...

There will be debates, new information, denials, revelations, speculation, and just about anything else you can think of, for perhaps years to come. But the known facts make it clear that what took the life of Michael Jackson was his overuse of heavy-duty prescription drugs.
Even his brother, Tito, has publicly acknowledged that there was a serious problem as far back as the ’90s. Because he was rich and famous, Jackson was able to get pretty much anything he wanted.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Michael Vick met last week to discuss Vick’s return to the NFL.
On Monday, Goodell announced a conditional reinstatement of Vick, which allows Vick to go to training camp and play the final two preseason games if he signs with a team. The reinstatement, however, includes a suspension through Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) of the NFL schedule. At that time, Goodell will evaluate Vick’s progress as a model citizen and decide then if Vick should be fully reinstated to play in the league.
This is insane.
Vick did the crime and...

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith recently wrote on his website that the team will make the NFL playoffs.
His declaration drew considerable attention, because it was a bold assessment considering the 2008 Lions produced the NFL’s first ever 0-16 season.
While most Detroit area fans snickered (or flat out laughed) when they heard Smith’s bold retort, I liked it. To me he has the right attitude. One has to believe in what he is doing if his endeavor is going to be anywhere near positive and fruitful.
It you do not believe that you can pass an...
