U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu recently announced the joint selection of awards of up to $6.3 million towards fundamental genomics-enabled research leading to the improved use of plant feedstocks for biofuel production.

Three quarters of the Borders stores in Michigan will host a book drive from Aug. 1 through Sept. 7 to benefit local children. The stores will collect new children’s books purchased by customers and provide them to Reach Out & Read. The organization promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms throughout Michigan.

Over the past week, the news media has focused on the controversial arrest of the legendary Henry Louis Gates with pundits arguing that the case represents a microcosm of racial relations generally and a referendum on racial profiling specifically.

For the third time this year, the citizens of Detroit are called upon to cast their votes for candidates running for the mayor’s office, City Council, charter commission, Board of Education and city clerk.
In total, there are 234 candidates on the ballot for voters to choose from.
Regarding the first two elections, there was a larger turnout for the February primary, according to election poll workers in an interview during May’s election. One worker who preferred to be anonymous said voter turnout was low due to confusion.
