Chris Brown and Frank Ocean, Rivals to the Bitter End

Surprise! Chris Brown is arrogant, narcissistic, self-centered, immature, irresponsible and in general a jerk. And now with his pseudo self-portrait that depicts him as a Jesus like figure, even I have to come to his rescue.  Although his detractors and haters speculate that the painting is more evidence that Brown’s oversized ego and exaggerated image of himself are the primary problem, I believe what Brown is attempting to convey here is the persecution he feels.

On Monday, Jan. 28, Brown posted a photo on Instagram of Jesus on the cross with the caption, "Painting the way I feel today."

Since the Rihanna beating scandal, Brown has been one of the most hated - although one of the most talented - young artists out there today. The scrutiny has been unrelenting, and even Brown’s brash exterior reveals a crack in the armor.

And now rival singer, Frank Ocean wants Chris Brown prosecuted over a Friday night brawl in a West Los Angeles parking lot. Since Brown is currently serving a five-year probation for assaulting his then (and apparently current girlfriend) the charges could very likely get his probation revoked and find him serving out the remainder of his sentence in jail.

Brown, 23, allegedly punched Ocean, 25, during an altercation and an investigation is underway.

Brown has yet to comment.

Brown and Ocean are both nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the Grammys, which take place on Feb. 10 in L.A.

Cissy Houston Remembers Daughter Whitney with New Book

Remembering Whitney Houston. It seems that everyone’s recall is different when it concerns the life of the beloved music icon. Just one year after the singer's untimely death, some of the closest folks to her have taken to the pen to honor her memory. Yet, what will their recollections impose upon the fallen artist’s legacy?

Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston, is set to spin the media world on its head next week with an exclusive interview with Oprah on the OWN Network’s ‘Next Chapter’ followed by the highly anticipated release of her new book ‘Remembering Whitney’. She is slated to open up and speak candidly about her daughter’s life, her tragic death, and everything in between.

Readers will get a real and uncut chronicling of Whitney’s experience as seen through her mother’s eyes. The interview given by her family immediately after her death to Oprah’s network tended to avoid the ‘elephant in the room’ on how and why Whitney died. Elements of denial continued with the family’s as titled Lifetime reality show ‘On Our Own’. Cissy’s candor is sure to settle the hearts of many who are waiting to hear the real story behind it all.

The OWN Network has recently become the hallmark of ‘airing it all out’ on television. Not simply for ratings, but because fans want to know the truth and hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. What more will Cissy Houston reveal that we have not already imagined in our minds to be true? Viewers must watch and see.

‘Sundance’ Awards Black Filmmaker for Oscar Grant Movie

Black cinema is steady building steam and the Sundance Film Festival continues to take notice. The 2013 awards ceremony, which took place in Park City, Utah, came to a close this past weekend honoring director Ryan Coogler of the film ‘Fruitvale’. The movie took home two wins: ‘Audience Award’ and ‘Grand Jury Prize’.

Just the previous year, Ava DuVernay made history with her film ‘Middle of Nowhere’ when she won ‘Best Director’, becoming the first African-American woman to receive the award. Coogler continued the trend of historic trailblazing as his wins on Saturday made him one of only three directors in history to take home both prizes.

‘Fruitvale’ tells the story of Oscar Grant, a 22 year old who was gunned down by a transit officer in Oakland, California. The movie, which has won high acclaim from critics and viewers alike, is creating noteworthy buzz in tinsel town.

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein- known most recently for ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’- purchased the movie early last week for distribution through his film company. The recent move may be exactly what ‘Fruitvale’ needs to get it on the awards roster. Will director Coogler and the film’s stars be walking the red carpet for the Oscars in 2014? Judging the success of Weinstein’s most recent projects, the odds are definitely in favor of the ‘Sundance’ hit.

Behind the Building of a Brand: Kimora Lee’s ‘House of Fab’

No stranger to the land of reality television, Kimora Lee returns with her latest project: the Style Network’s ‘House of Fab’. At first glance, it’s easy to assume the show isn’t a far cry from what we’ve previously seen from the self-appointed queen of ‘fabulosity’. But, wait, there’s more.

‘House of Fab’ takes you behind the scenes of the multi-million dollar online subscription service ‘Just Fab’. It gives members all access to the hottest looks chosen by celebrity stylists. Perhaps the future of fashion, ‘Just Fab’ is consistently on the rise as it continues to grow in popularity. Kimora’s new show gives viewers an opportunity to see that creating and conducting the business is not always fun and games.

Airing Wednesdays at 9 pm, ‘House of Fab’ is a refreshing break from what currently dominates the airwaves. It essentially leaves the foolish antics and unproductive debauchery at the door. Rather, the drama we do witness is productive in that it contributes to the building and further expansion of the company’s brand.

Building a brand seems to Kimora Lee’s forte. The model mogul’s name has become synonymous with the finest in fashion entrepreneurship. With companies like Baby Phat and KLS as well as five perfumes under her belt, Lee has turned her sense of style into much more than a pretty penny. At best, those who aspire to walk in her footsteps will get a glimpse of what it takes as they tune into ‘House of Fab’. If that’s not your goal, at least you will be entertained.

Let us hope that given the current reel of reality television and what now drawings the biggest ratings, the show can survive. Will you be watching?
