Health care reform is certainly on our minds at this year’s Mackinac Policy Conference as we’ve just witnessed the enactment of the most groundbreaking health care legislation in the past 45 years. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed into law by President Obama in March, will change the landscape of health care as we currently know it. However, passage of this legislation does not mark the end of the road. Instead, it is a step in the process of arriving at real, substantive health care reform.

A major point of focus at the 30th annual Mackinac Policy Conference is going to be this fall’s elections. It is my fervent hope that the focus is not on the horse race aspects of who’s going to win and lose, but rather on who will actually bring a commitment to developing sound public policy to Lansing.

A fearless friend and optimistic opponent, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Dick Blouse faced a daunting list of challenges upon his arrival nearly sixteen years ago. He never considered losing or leaving and there’s something good to say about a man like that.
Dick Blouse believed in diversity when diversity wasn’t’ a popular or proven goal. He guaranteed bottom line results with aggressive recruitment of small and minority business members. And he delivered, making the Detroit Chamber the largest metropolitan chamber of commerce in the United States, with 20,000 members.
