Jerrid Mooney and Tony Piraino are two visionary businessmen who absolutely LOVE Detroit. So much so that they decided to create a special event to celebrate the passionate Spirit that Detroiters have for their city. They titled it "The Drop" and made local history.
First they erected an 11-story free-standing tower that rises majestically from the foot of Woodward avenue near the Compuware Center. Then they forged a giant illuminated "Letter D" to sit atop it as a one-night beacon for the city.
Just a few minutes before midnight, the "D" begins its slow descent down the tower while changing colors as thousands of excited onlookers cheer the approach of the New Year. It is a breathtaking visual sight.
Leading into "The Drop" is the performance of the "Light Up Detroit" theme song which musically symbolizes what Mooney and Piraino are trying to achieve visually and symbolically - Light Up Detroit and bring people downtown
in a collective spirit to celebrate all that is great about this fabulous city. Female singing group, DMK, will lead the crowd in singing the anthem this year.
With their imagination and efforts, Mooney and Piraino have securely established a wonderful new ongoing Holiday Tradition and have inspired hundreds of thousands of people throughout Metro Detroit to embrace
Detroit and its downtown area. Bravo, gentlemen. Detroit appreciates you.
This year, the D-Drop Duet have a surprise in store for the attendees of Motor City New Year's Eve celebration. Never satisfied with past accomplishments, they are completely re-engineering "The Drop". They have commissioned noted metal artists, the Nordin Brothers, to design and build a masterpiece object to serve as the new symbol for the event. It's called the "D Burst" and it will be spectacular.
