New Orleans based entertainer Lil Wayne has become the latest rapper to grovel at the the feet of his corporate sponsors in hopes of not getting kicked off the plantation, and in the words of the Emmett Till family — he fell “short.”
Mountain Dew, a PepsiCo company, has dropped Lil Wayne as a sponsor because of backlash he received for comparing slain teen, Emmett Till, to a mangled vagina in Future’s “Karate Chop” (Remix), TMZ reports.
Earlier this week, Mountain Dew removed an ad created by Odd Future’s Tyler, The Creator, after it gained notoriety, in part, because Dr. Boyce Watkins referred to it as arguably “the most racist ad in history.”
As previously reported by NewsOne, Rev. Jesse Jackson joined with the Till family to insist that Epic Records remove the offensive lyric and the song from radio rotation. But until his dollars were threatened, Tunechi remained unapologetic.
Airickca Gordon-Taylor, Executive Director, Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and the Till Family Representative, released the following statement after Wayne’s non-apology:
We are aware of Lil Wayne’s statement of acknowledgement of our family’s pain and our disapproval of referencing Emmett Till in his lyrical content.
While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music’, this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.
Note to rappers: You’re nothing special to these corporations — just another black face willing to shuck and jive to a jingle. The minute you reflect badly on them, you will be dismissed. Just ask Tyler, The Creator, Lil Wayne, or Rick Ross.
