Fordham University launches project to create database of slavery burial grounds
Category: RTM News Reel Written by Carrie Healey, theGrio

Fordham University is launching a project to create a database today which lists the burial grounds of enslaved African-Americans in the United States.
Sandra Arnold, a history student in Fordham’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies, has been leading the ambitious project, reports Fordham University’s eNewsroom.
Irma Watkins-Owens, Ph.D., is the co-director and an associate professor of history and African-American studies at Fordham. The two are working closely with advisers from several other American universities, including Emory, Yale, and the College of William and Mary.
“The burial grounds of the enslaved are sacred spaces; they mark their place in the world and are a testimony to the humanity of a people denied dignity in life,” said Watkins-Owens in an interview with eNewsroom. “We must remember, recover and restore these spaces. Doing so is a testimony to our own humanity.”
The idea for the database came when Arnold discovered the plantation cemetery where here ancestors had been buried in her home state of Tennessee. Arnold had the opportunity to visit the site where her great-grandparents had been laid to rest in 2003. Her great-grandfather, B. Harmon and his wife, Ethel, were former slaves.
“I went out there, and it was just breathtaking,” Arnold said of the burial site. “It’s an island in a cotton field, at the end of a field road.”
In a statement to theGrio, Arnold said:
“Burial grounds and cemeteries serve as monuments that remind us of the history, identity and place of a people. Most enslaved African Americans are buried in unmarked or abandoned graves all over the United States, forcing their disappearance from the American landscape. As they vanish, they take with them heritage and history. Rescuing them from obscurity, we not only properly memorialize enslaved African Americans; we mark their place in the world. With the support of descendants, property owners, churches and local organizations, the Burial Database of Enslaved African Americans seeks to identify, document and memorialize these men, women and children.”
The new database could impact thousands of Americans, and has potential that Arnold calls “immeasurable.”
“Not only can it properly memorialize the enslaved, it can also facilitate a mutual and respectful dialogue about a subject that is still very sensitive to many.”

Michelle Obama announces new social welfare group ‘Organizing For Action’
Category: RTM News Reel Written by Brittany Tom, theGrio

Flaunting her new hairdo, Michelle Obama announced in a video a new venture of Obama’s campaign operation called Organizing For Action, a social welfare nonprofit group to give power to local organizers to forward the president’s second term agenda.
“Organizing for Action will support the legislative agenda we voted on, train the next generation of grassroots organizers and leaders, and organize around local issues in our communities,” according to the president’s webpage.
Obama’s 2012 campaign manager and the chair of Organizing for Action, Jim Messina, stated in an email that the group, “will be a supporter-driven organization, as we’ve always been, staying true to our core principles: respect, empower, include… We’ll work on the key battles of our generation, train the next generation of grassroots organizers and leaders, and organize around local issues in our own communities. We’ll continue to support the President in creating jobs and growing the economy from the middle out, and in fighting for issues like immigration reform, climate change, balanced deficit reduction, and reducing gun violence.”
The initiative is a relaunch of a similar effort from Obama’s last term. The group drew some controversy last term among Democrats who were upset by the out pour of suggestions and donations on controversial issues like health care reform.
This time, however, by remaining separate from the DNC, the organization will be able to accept unlimited funds for grassroots organizers. All names of the donors, it was announced, will also be disclosed.
The first lady says in the video that, “Winning an election won’t bring about the change we see. It’s the simply the chance to make that change. I hope you join Organizing for Action to seize that chance.”

Obama’s Immigration Reform Push To Begin This Month
Category: RTM News Reel Written by News One

WASHINGTON -- Despite a bruising fiscal cliff battle that managed to set the stage for an even more heated showdown that will likely take place in a matter of months, President Barack Obama is planning to move full steam ahead with the rest of his domestic policy agenda.
An Obama administration official said the president plans to push for immigration reform this January. The official, who spoke about legislative plans only on condition of anonymity, said that coming standoffs over deficit reduction are unlikely to drain momentum from other priorities. The White House plans to push forward quickly, not just on immigration reform but gun control laws as well.
The timeframe is likely to be cheered by Democrats and immigration reform advocates alike, who have privately expressed fears that Obama's second term will be drowned out in seemingly unending showdowns between parties. The just-completed fiscal cliff deal is giving way to a two-month deadline to resolve delayed sequestration cuts,

Glenn Beck’s New Year’s Resolution: Anyone Who Mentions President’s Name Will Be Fired
Category: RTM News Reel Written by News One

Shortly after President Barack Obama won re-election last month, NewsOnecompiled the often ridiculous — and always dramatic — reactions of Republicans[1]. Now you can add Glenn Beck‘s name to that list, after he announced this week that his New Year’s resolution involved firing anyone who mentioned the President’s name on his show.
Bitter much?

After coming back from his 18-day vacation, Beck told his co-hosts that there would be consequences for anyone on his show that mentioned President Obama’s name, “Anybody who brings him up, besides me, is fired.”
Incredulous, co-host Stu Burguiere replied, “I hope I have some immunity here if I say this incorrectly, but can we say, ‘The President did blah, blah, blah. The President said….’”
To which Beck responded that he would evaluate statements on a “case-by-case basis.” Beck then informed his colleagues that audio of Obama’s voice was also barred, with Burguiere saying, “Now we can’t p

L.A. Lawyer Loans House (Rent Free) To Homeless Family For 1 Year
Category: RTM News Reel Written by News One

A Harvard-educated lawyer in Los Angeles has loaned his home to a homeless family a full year because, for him, it’s the right thing to do, CBS News reports[1].
Tony Tolbert, 51, will move in with his mother while the new family takes the year to get back on their feet. Tony told CBS News that his giving spirit comes from his dad who always opened the family home to those who needed a place to stay. In fact, Tony says he could not remember a time there wasn’t someone extra living with the family.
Now, Tony is taking the step to carry on his father’s spirit of generosity in a major way. He reached out to the Alexandra House, a homeless shelter for women and their children. There he found Felicia Dukes, the woman to home he offered to loan his home. “They had a young man that wanted to donate their house to you for a year,” Dukes recounted. “And I’m looking at her, like, what? Like — Are you serious?”
Dukes was sharing a single occupancy room at the shelter with three of her children, but
