How To Cope And Repair After A Hurricane

Major health and safety hazards remain even after a hurricane’s wind and rain have passed. Injuries can happen to anyone dealing with the aftermath of a major storm, so it is wise to be overly cautious. Debris-filled streets are dangerous; therefore, walk or drive with caution. Prior to entering a building, check for structural damage.

Make sure it is not in danger of collapse. Turn off any outside gas lines and let house air for several minutes to remove escaping gas. Upon entering a building, do not use open flame as a light source: Use a battery-operated flashlight. Never leave young children alone or allow them to play in damaged buildings or in areas that might be unsafe. Wear protective clothing on legs, arms, feet, and hands while cleaning up debris. Wear rubber gloves while scrubbing flood damaged interiors and furniture.

How To Help The Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

Comfort the hurting, pull the trapped out of the wreckage, administer first aid until help arrives. But if you’re 150 miles away, don’t jump in your pickup with a load of used clothing. Odds are you’ll just be in the way – and could even be mistaken as a looter!
The Salvation Army mobilizes its 3.4 million volunteers in times of disaster – but most have gone through specialized training and are sent where they can be the most effective. The same goes for the millions of volunteers trained by the American Red Cross. The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to stay informed of and heed all warnings and evacuation orders. Disaster response professionals recommend having a three-to-five day supply of food and water for each member of your family as well as flashlights, medication and battery powered radios. Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel are mobilized. Donors are encouraged to give online at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org[1]

NJ Gov. Christie Slams Atlantic City Mayor, Praises President Obama For Leadership During Superstorm Sandy [VIDEO]

New Jersey Chris ChristieA somber and visibly angry Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) held a press conference during which he slammed Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford and praised President Barack Obama for their handling of the ferocious superstorm devastating the East Coast.

Despite Christie’s warnings to evacuate the state to avoid Hurricane Sandy, Langford advised Atlantic City residents to stay and ride out the storm. They are now trapped with no rescue in sight until possibly morning.

“Mayor Langford told them to stay at shelters in the city and now they’re stuck,” Christie said is obvious angry disbelief. “Despite my admonition to evacuate, he gave them comfort, for some reason, to stay. We have a large number of people, we can’t quantify at this point, and at this juncture, there is no other way for us to go in and get them; they’re just going to have to ride out the storm there.”

Gov. Christie said he could not, “in good conscience,” send workers out in dark, dangerous conditions to attempt to rescue peo

andrew curry chicago facebookA 22-year-old Chicagoan is facing up to seven years in prison on aggravated domestic battery charges for posting a Facebook photo of his daughter bound and gagged, the Chicago Tribune reports[1]. Andre Curry managed to beat an unlawful restraint charge in court Tuesday, but the judge is still debating the battery charges.

At the trial hearing where he was acquitted of the restraint charge, Curry told Judge Lawrence Flood how the incident unfolded at his home last December. Curry claims he was playing with his 22-month-old daughter when he decided to bind her hands, feet and mouth with blue painters tape as a joke. He then took a picture of her with his camera phone and uploaded it to his Facebook page. The image was complemented by a message saying, “This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back ;).”
