We Can’t Afford To Lose Affirmative Action At Colleges, Universities

Tamika Mallory on VotingIf you’ve never been to N.Y.C., you might be surprised by the amount of diversity and vibrant cultural exchanges you can find.  But if you look past the bright lights of Times Square and actually see who’s working, who’s unemployed, who’s in the executive seats, who’s living where, and who’s getting a good education, you might be even more surprised by what you learn.  Even here, at the center of the world, the need for reform and programs that can begin to fix some of these inequalities are necessary.

So just imagine how we need them in the rest of the country. One such program, affirmative action at colleges and universities, has for years tried to balance the issue of unequal access to higher learning.  Now with one court case, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, the Supreme Court may very well decide the fate of affirmative action at schools everywhere. Oral arguments begin this week, and we young folks must be there to let the court and justices know what people in our

Mom Of Son Killed By Police: He Never Touched Cop Who Shot Him

Gil Collar Shot AlabamaMONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Mother of a University of South Alabama freshman killed by a campus police officer said Monday she’s been told he never touched the officer who shot him.

Gil Collar (pictured right) of Wetumpka was naked when he was shot at 1:30 a.m. Saturday outside the campus police station. University officials said Collar, a star wrestler at Wetumpka High School before enrolling in South Alabama, assumed a “fighting stance” and chased the officer before being shot. The university said security video captured the events.

Watch news coverage of the killing:

“I have been told by someone involved in the investigation that the videotape shows my son never touched the police officer,” Bonnie Smith Collar (pictured) said in a phone interview. She did not elaborate on how the person was involved in the investigation.

The university said the officer heard a bang on a window at campus police headquarters and went outside to investigate. The officer tried to retreat numerous times to

4 Weeks Left To Election Day!

Election 2012LOS ANGELES — Rumbling in to its final four weeks, the presidential campaign is playing out on both coasts and multiple fronts, with Republican Mitt Romney seeking stature on foreign affairs and President Barack Obama raising political cash by the millions.

Negative ads, charges of dishonesty, and dwindling time are all setting the tone.

Joining celebrities for fund-raising in Los Angeles on Sunday, Obama for the first time needled himself over a poor debate performance. But he declared he had the right focus and “I intend to win.”

Romney was in Virginia, trying to bury the memories of his fumbled trip abroad this summer and knock Obama back on national security. “Hope is not a strategy,” he said in excerpts of a Monday speech at the Virginia Military Institute.

The campaigns already had eyes on the next debate, the sole face-off between Vice President Joe Biden and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, which will grab attention as the Thursday

Everyone remembers those twins from Rock Hill, N.C., who gave birth on the same day, right?

Zaakira Mitchell gave birth to a healthy boy and her sister, Shaakira White, delivered twins–a girl and a boy. All three babies are 2-months-old now. When news of their miraculous deliveries hit their small town, local newspapers and television crews swarmed down on their hospital room, making a primetime event out of what is normally a private, intimate moment between mother and child.

‘New Yorker’ Debate Cover Depicts President Obama As Empty Chair

the-new-yorkerNever shy about tapping into public perceptions or crafting cultural icongraphy, no matter how slanted, “The New Yorker” has created a cover of the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and GOP opponent, Mitt Romney, that is sure to raise some eyebrows.

The cover is a caricature of the roles the two politicians seemed to be playing that night:  Mittens as stern-faced and self-righteous savior of the free world, and the POTUS as, well, an empty chair. The latter being a clear parody of Clint Eastwood‘s spectacularly awkward and spontaneous performance at the Republican National Convention.

Moderator, Jim Lehrer, is depicted as an out-of-focus figure in the background, which is the most authentic image of the cover.

“The New Yorker” was embroiled in controversy in 2008 after they depicted the First Couple as Islamic, militant, fist bumping terrorists. At the time, they argued that the cover’s purpose was to shine the light on the ignorance assumptions and stereotypes that
