Detroit is a city with growing pains and I’ve yet to see anyone who denies that truth. At the same time, Detroit is also a city with evidentiary hope and promise which continue to inspire those who are working tirelessly in the city for the betterment of us all.

So when “Dateline NBC” announced that it would air a one-hour special on Detroit, “America Now: City of Heartbreak and Hope,” about one of the most misunderstood cities in the nation, some of us held our breath and wanted to give the all-knowing reporter, Chris Hansen, the benefit of the doubt.

We expected Hansen — who has similar credentials to Time magazine reporter Daniel Okrent, who did a shoddy and lazy job of telling us how Detroit is backward without an incisive view of the city — to give us balanced reporting on the crisis facing this city because both hail from this area. Hansen, in interviews he conducted prior to the airing of the special on Sunday evening, especially his appearance on WDIV’s “FlashPoint,” appeared like a surgeon who understood the city’s ailment and was out to issue the required prescriptions. But that was not the case. Apparently his interview on “FlashPoint” was a sales pitch for thousands in the Motor City to watch the upcoming program. To our disappointment, Hansen repeated the same things that Okrent did when he also jetted in like a savior who wanted to deliver Detroit from its varied problems. Hansen’s reporting was devoid of any balanced picture of where the city is currently.

One is forced to wonder if there is a concerted effort by the media to bury Detroit alive despite the efforts being made by committed, hardworking men and women to change the current economic and political climate.
Hansen talked about the city’s old train station standing in ruins for years as an example of how economically destabilized Detroit is. But he woefully failed to mention the Matty Maroun connection to that train station and why it is in its present condition.

Why?

Is it because Maroun is a powerful transportation mogul, almost an omnipotent White businessman who is untouchable by the media?

Is it because the reporter thinks that Detroiters cannot read between the lines of their very subjective and prejudicial reporting?

This type of omission is one reason there is a growing suspicion that the media is never up to any good when it comes to Detroit.

It is the same reason why a lot of people are no longer watching the news and reading the newspapers, choosing instead to tell their own stories through the blogsphere.

If the media, which is supposed to be that sacred fourth estate, is now a fifth column, then it is justified when people look to the Internet for information instead of the clearly filtered, biased news organs.

Hansen owed his viewers the responsibility of an accurate picture of the city. He mentioned the 1967 riot in passing (perhaps it was not that significant to him as far as Detroit’s political and economical evolution is concerned), a cunning way to dance around the issue of race.

At the center of Hansen’s reporting is Cordette Grantling, who has been raising abandoned children despite having a meager income. But the spirit that Grantling exemplifies is the same zest and dynamism maintained by those who have chosen not to leave Detroit despite the constant bashing by the media.

All Hansen had to do was find more people who personify Grantling’s spirit, but he instead went in search of the most extreme situations which can be found anywhere in New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, and any other city where there is a large underclass.

The portrayal of Detroit on “Dateline NBC” was primitive with its ever-present racial undertones taking the city to the dark ages, a stark reminder of how the media succeeded in blindfolding African Americans about Africa with its “Tarzan ape” image of another misunderstood continent.

How You Can Take Charge of Our Story

New Detroit (www.newdetroit.org) hosted an event called "Taking Charge of Our Story" prior to the Dateline report. The focus was on journalism and the responsibility of media to accurately portray Detroit’s stories. The co-organizers are now in the process of creating an e-book to tell Detroit's many stories that are often untold in mainstream media. If you would like to help tell our city's stories in the e-book, please contact mhong@newdetroit.org.

NBC did their little story about Detroit, talking about all the problems the city has, but they didn't offer no solutions. It was one sided. Detroit ain't the only city with unemployment, crime, crooked politicians, violence, a school system that don't work, etc. But the thing is , what are we gonna do about it? We might not like what was aired on NBC, but it's not up to them to make the city better. We can't depend on the mainstrame media, politicians, and others. It's up to you.

It is time for all within the community to look long and hard at the true realities of our great city( notice i did NOT say once great city ) It is up to Detroiters and people who love the city to clean up its image. We cannot expect for people who do not live in our city nor LOVE our city to respect it. Some of the politicians in the city have repeatedly ripped the city off and made off with profits for themselves and their friends and family while those who voted them in get stuck holding the bag. Detroiters need to go back to loving the communities they live in. It can be beautiful again but people have to CARE, truly care about where they live and breathe everyday. So what a bad story was written, if the truth hurts don't listen then. Look at the problems that plague our communities and try to fix them collectively with others on the block.

WDET is bringing The Takeaway in to co-broadcast the show from Detroit later this week and they'll be talking about our city. They want to know what you love about Detroit. What do you feel are the most important stories about our city that America needs to understand? This is your chance to share your side and influence national media's portrayal of Detroit. Take a moment to post your thoughts here: http://www.thetakeaway.org/blogs/takeaway/2010/apr/23/what-do-you-love-about-detroit/

I have not seen the show nor do I really have a desire too. I find it truly berating that once again Detroit gets slammed dunked and put down. I believe in the old school reality that if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem period. After reading the above comments from others I have to leave everyone with some thoughts. First of all stop giving us a sad story about why you HAD to come back to Detroit and how much better where you came from is like Southfield and Oak Park.Yawn. Also it seems like we have a local problem first amongst black folk that are so quick to pass judgment w/o even trying to help affect change. You must have a passion for excellence not superiority over your brothers and sisters with blanket statement rhetoric. I live in Detroit Purchased a home in the city and am active in my block club. My neighborhood is clean and is reflective of most of the city. Lastly if you arent going to support the kids vote or help in some way then please leave and maybe dont come back cause you are the problem.

My my my, I watched the Dateline report on Detroit and found it to be TRUE! I live in the Russell Woods area (westside) of Detroit off Dexter & Davision and its a war zone, there are NO business's except Barber shops & Liquor stores and EVERY block has at lease 3 vancant homes on it that all need to come down, windows, sideing & doors all missing. There are men & women at every gas station & liquor store begging!! the only discent store is the CVS which the Russell Woods Community did not even want (duh) I had to move back to this area to help take care of my mom or I would have stayed in Southfield where it is a whole different world. Detroit is upset about the truth because the truth HURTS! why do you think soooo many people have left this city? just wait until the census totals come out. The schools are aweful and I guess "white" kids come here to the city and tear them up RIGHT? If The Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau was on their job maybe another side to this TRUE story would have been seen as well BUT the things that people are saying is the "positive side" is just the norm in other cites, Yes there is crime in ALL major metro cites BUT their bureaus DONT let it get out, you would have to be a fool to think that ATL,LA,DC & NY don't have crime. Detroit I hope that from this very TRUE & SAD sorry we get some much needed HELP! All Detroiters who are so bothereed by the truth what YOU gonna do about it??? the storys and visions were NOT staged!! have you called your elected officals to see whats beings done? Oh and don't forget that our Mayor was in the story too, did he not know what they were going to show HELLO!!!!!
The Truth DOES Hurt

Ironically, Chris Hansen is originally from Michigan. And while he grew up in Oakland County, he served as a Channel 4 anchorman for Detroit in the 80’s. He is not any more shrewd or sick than your neighbor and has reputable insight into the current goings-on in Detroit as compared to decades past.

Why isn’t it as easy as turning Detroit into a “metropolitan”? Let’s use the influence and tax dollars of outlying cities and counties and equitably distribute the costs and benefits of Detroit’s development. What do we expect to gain from the few taxpayers that are left in the city now? There are too few people left to support the changes needed. The city is most frequented by those living in Oakland and Macomb Counties – for sporting events, restaurants, casinos, markets, shows and entertainment, parades, festivals and plenty of other exciting reasons to bring us all into downtown. With our invested finances comes a greater vested interest. Bottom line: Share our small-town tax dollars with Detroit, make the city safer, cleaner and more inviting, and more importantly, with the influx of tax payers come and influx in voters too. Think of the positive changes that could bring!

I must say as person who was raised and born in the city of Detroit and who has supported the city in many efforts to reform I am now heart broken and ashamed of the city of which i grew up in...The Truth Hurts, and what was aired on NBC was the truth...Despite the many efforts that they say are being made to help the city to reform to me is a crock of Sh!...At this point in time Detroit has sank so, low is there really anyway to save it..when there is no such thing as a CLEAN POLITICAN..when you can steal money from the future of your own kids and city and see nothing wrong with it, exactly how do you correct that mantality...Its like the City of Detroit itself is on crack..Try to do right but, keep running back to that crack pipe..
Chris Hansen's One-Sided Report on Detroit

Hansen's report was completely one-sided, focusing only on the negatives and omitting mention of the many positives, e.g., Mayor Bing's plans for the city, Robert Bobb's efforts to put the DPS on a sound financial footing, the volunteer reading tutoring program, the renovation of the Book-Cadillac Hotel, the River Walk, the renaissance of Ford, GM and Chrysler, our first class airport, not to mention the advantage of being a deep water port and a gateway to Ontario.

What else would anyone expect from the glib host of "To Catch a Predator," created by sick people, about sick people and watched by sick people? A single expose would have sufficed. But week after week? Give us a break! It shows how low NBC will stoop to get more viewers.
